The best thing of this necklace is that it’s made by using a single piece of Leather cord, rather than 3 separate ones to create the braid, and by doubling the cord up we get a fancy looking interweave!
- Supplies:
- Round Leather Cord, 2 metres (approx 2.2 yards) of 4mm
- Masking or painters tape
- Measuring Tape
- Scissors
- Round Magnetic Clasp 4mm
- Pliers
Firstly, we have to cut a 2 metre length of cord and double it over. Then attach doubled up cord to our working space with some tape. We will have to leave about 25cm at the top (above the tape) leaving the remaining cord at the bottom to create our braid.
Secondly, using the long end, make a loop by bringing it back up on the right, under itself just below the tape. After that we will bring the end back over to the right and down through the loop finishing with the long end on the right. With this we will have three cords to braid with. Start by bringing the cord on the left into the middle.
Thirdly, we are going to bring the cord on the right into the middle. Make sure to keep the doubled up cords flat next to each other.
Fourthly, we will pull the long tail through the loop created by the other two cords and to avoid the cords getting tangled we have to put a finger on the braiding stops, which is going to keep cord from pulling out of shape.
Fifthly, continue braiding, until we reach the bottom by bringing the left cord into the middle, then the right. To complete the braid, we are going to bring the long end over into the middle, which will look like a loop at the bottom. It is advisable to follow this last step with some room to spare, rather than trying to make it really tight. Then by pulling the sections apart slightly, we are going to put in order the braiding in place.
Sixthly, we will gently curve out the braiding, making sure none of the cords are warped. The braided section will be approx 13cm long and now we have 20-25cm of cord left on each side to make up the rest of the necklace. If you want then length of the necklace can be shorten, as per your choice.
Lastly, we are going to add the magnetic clasp: Fill the half of the Magnetic clasps with glue and start to slide the cord inside the slot. Push down the cord and make sure it is inserted properly. Wipe off the extra glue on your clasps and cords with the wiper.
Follow this step on the both side of the necklace cord end and give your neck piece an easy accessible closure with the magnetic clasps.
