Where do I start if I want to start making jewellery?

Designing and making jewellery can be a super fun hobby that can quickly turn addictive!

For many, it’s a great creative outlet that will keep you busy and provide the joys of feeling accomplished after creating something from its material form, to a piece of jewellery that can bring style and personality to any outfit!

So, how do I start?

Finding your perfect supplies can be a challenging task, but with Sun Enterprises the process can be made a lot easier. We have a vast array of materials to choose from to create leather, beaded or wax cotton or silk cords, for your jewellery designs. You don’t have to start out by spending too much money; you can request samples of colours, textures, finishes and materials of our different products. This way, you can find what works best for you and your brand in terms of style and price. For our new customers who may not be familiar with our product offering we have a colour chart of 126 different colours, shades and finishes of our round leather cord finishes including matt, vintage and metallic styles.

Here’s a useful guide outlining the types of supplies you’ll likely need to get started on your jewellery making adventure:

TOOLS:

 - All-purpose glue

-  Nippers

- Flat nose pliers

- Round nose pliers

- Beading Needle

- Split pliers

MATERIALS:

- Chain

- Wires

- (Leather) cord

- Wax cotton cord

- Stitched Nappa leather cord

- Closures (and/or magnetic locks)

- Rings

ACCESSORIES:

- Ribbon

- Extension chains

- Beads

- Charms

- Pendants

- End pieces and end clasps

And lastly, of course safety!

For example, when cutting steel wire, the material can sometimes slip. Therefore, for your safety, always wear safety glasses when cutting steel.

This is just a simple list, but there are unlimited possibilities. As mentioned before, this is a general list for the majority of beginners, but the important thing is that you find your own style. For example, you may prefer leatherworking over beaded jewellery, or creating women’s jewellery over men’s. These different options will mean you’ll require different tools, materials and colours!

Some final tips!

I can also recommend that you purchase good quality tools, as you should see this as an investment into your hobby/ brand, if you are confident about starting jewelry making.
